Project information

The "GET in" project - Guide to Equal Treatment in the Private Sector - is active in the discrimination field "publicly offered goods and services" mainly involving the private sector. It concentrates on the business and financial services sectors.

The relevant forms of discrimination cover the unfair treatment in sales conversations, at consumer services, redlining (practice of denying or increasing the cost of services, such as banking or insurance, to residents of certain areas) and criminalization through bag inspections without legal cause e.g. at department stores.

The aim of the project is establish indicators to determine acts of discrimination compared to the EC Directive 2000/43/EC. Subsequently guidelines to be used by potential victims of racial discrimination will be created. They will be encouraged and supported to use litigation and the criteria of the EC Directives with the purpose of reporting instances of unequal treatment.

Advisory centres (such as anti-discrimination bureaus, migration services and consumer associations) need to be trained as well in order to assist potential victims in a competent way. Therefore assessment guidelines for counsellors will be developed containing detailed information about the political and juridical impact of the EU-equal treatment policy and possible legal courses of action.

At the same time the project aims to stimulate self regulation at suppliers side in order to counter racial discrimination. In close collaboration with businesses and other associations, recommendations will be developed for non-discriminatory dealings with customers. As a result companies should create codes of conduct according to the requirements of the EC Directive.
